Mr. Desmond Sears started in the shipping industry as a ship’s agent in the Shipping Department of the Bauxite Industry Development Company (BIDCO) in 1974. He worked in various capacities attaining the level of General Manager Shipping and Logistics within the company’s marketing and shipping division, with responsibility for the scheduling of all vessels calling for Bauxite at Port Linden and Port Everton until his departure in 1994.

In 1979, during his tenure at BIDCO, Desmond attended the Norwegian Shipping Academy on a NORAD Fellowship and was the second Guyanese to have earned a Diploma in Professional shipping from that institution.

Having left BIDCO, Desmond commenced working with Roraima Mining Company in the development of Silica Sand for the export market. Thereafter, he moved to Mazaruni Granite Ltd. in the aggregate business, targeting the export market for aggregate, with responsibility for giving logistical shipping reports for that industry. In 1993 he joined two (2) other former employees of BIDCO to set up a Ship Agency Business, namely Delmur Company Ltd, which was initially involved in the employment of seamen, stevedoring activities and bagging of fertilizer, operating one of the first bagging plants in Guyana.

Upon the dissolution of BIDCO, Delmur Company took over the Agency for Bauxite vessels calling at Port Everton and Port Linden and subsequently the transhipment station in Berbice.

He was also a member of the Management Committee of the Shipping Association of Guyana for a number of years before rising to the position of Chairman, and is the first Guyanese to be inducted into the Silver Club of the Caribbean Shipping Association in 2007.

Mr. Sears is the recipient of two awards from the Shipping Association of Guyana.
